David Sills
David Sills Healthy again
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 8:20 PM
Sills was dealing with a back or rib injury but appears to be healthy again, John Schmeelk of the Giants' official site reports.
Analysis: Sills returned to action after getting injured during a practice session in late May. The 27-year-old registered 11 catches for 106 yards in nine games last season, but could find his roster spot in jeopardy as New York's receiving room has become a lot more crowded throughout the offseason.
Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley Won't rule out skipping 2023 season
Mon, Jun 12, 2023, 8:27 AM
Barkley said Sunday that sitting out the 2023 season amid contract negotiations is "a card I could play" if he and the Giants remain at an impasse, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.
Analysis: Barkley, who hasn't yet signed his franchise tender and looks set to skip the Giants' mandatory minicamp this week, noted that he wants to remain with the team for his entire NFL career. That said, the 26-year-old also made clear his frustrations with ongoing contract talks and acknowledged the possibility of a regular-season holdout. "That comes up in conversation if something don't get done by July 17," Barkley said of the deadline for both sides to agree on a long-term contract. The Pro-Bowl running back's importance to the Giants offense can't be overstated, so the team will have plenty of incentive to get the situation under control. Barkley is coming off a bounce-back campaign in which he rushed for 1,312 yards and 10 scores.
Kadarius Toney
Kadarius Toney Seemingly staying in New York
Wed, May 4, 2022, 3:49 PM
Bills coach Brian Daboll said Tuesday that he looks forward to working with Toney, who was the subject of trade rumors prior to the 2022 NFL Draft, NFL.com's Nick Shook reports.
Analysis: The Bills did add second-round pick Wan'Dale Robinson to an already-deep WR room, but they'll likely need help even if Toney has a big Year 2, considering Darius Slayton is in a contract year and coming off a poor season while Sterling Shepard works his way back from an Achilles tear. Plus, Kenny Golladay missed 11 games for the Lions in 2020 and then managed only 521 yards in 14 games in his first season with the Giants. It's a situation that could allow Toney to emerge as Daniel Jones' favorite receiver, especially after recent reports suggested that the Giants listened to trade offers but never actually shopped the young wideout. The team hopes a new coaching staff along with healthier seasons from Jones/Golladay/Toney will equate to huge improvement on last year's dismal passing offense (31st in yards, 30th in TDs, 19th in INTs, 31st in NY/A). Toney showed up to the voluntary offseason program a few days before the draft, after his absence early on led to some headlines and perhaps fueled the trade rumors.
Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones Option won't be picked up
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 11:58 AM
The Giants don't intend to pick up the fifth-year option on Jones' contract, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Per Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York, exercising Jones' option would have committed the Giants to paying him $22.3 million in 2023. That said, if the 2019 first-rounder plays well this coming season, the team will have the option to pursue an extension with Jones or place the franchise tag on him next year. The QB, who turns 25 next month, remains atop the team's depth chart, now backed up by veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor.
Kadarius Toney
Kadarius Toney Joins voluntary workouts
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 11:13 AM
Toney (shoulder) was present for Monday's voluntary workout, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Per Ralph Vacchiano of SportsNet New York, it's unclear if that was the original plan for Toney (who wasn't present for start of the team's voluntary offseason workouts last week), or if recent trade rumors may have factored into the wideout's decision to join in. With that in mind, Vacchiano adds that he's been told the Giants weren't actively shopping the 2021 first-rounder. Instead, Vacchiano indicates that the team has been willing to listen if other franchises called about the 23-year-old, though that approach applies to other players as well. In any case, Vacchiano notes that it doesn't appear that New York is inclined to sell low on a player that was drafted 20th overall just last year.
Kadarius Toney
Kadarius Toney Could be moved
Fri, Apr 22, 2022, 5:44 PM
Pat LeonardNew York Daily News indicates that the Giants are open to trading Toney (shoulder).
Analysis: The report suggests that the Giants are making calls to other teams to see what they can get in return for the 2021 first-rounder, who wasn't present for start of the team's voluntary offseason workouts earlier this week. In his first pro season, Toney -- who was projected to add some speed and yards-after-the-catch ability to New York's offense -- dealt with a variety of injuries en route to catching 39 passes on 57 targets for 420 yards and no TDs in 10 games.
Jordan Akins
Jordan Akins Lands in New York
Thu, Apr 21, 2022, 1:22 PM
Akins is signing with the Giants, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: A 2018 third-round pick, Akins never topped 418 yards or two TDs in his four years with the Texans, though he did play at least 13 games each season. He and Ricky Seals-Jones will compete to replace Evan Engram (Jaguars) as the Giants' top pass catcher at tight end, though the upcoming NFL Draft could bring a third competitor for the job.
Gary Brightwell
Gary Brightwell Participates in minicamp
Wed, Apr 20, 2022, 4:28 PM
Brightwell (neck) was a participant in the Giants' voluntary minicamp Wednesday.
Analysis: Brightwell ended last season on IR after suffering a neck injury in Week 15 against the Cowboys. The 2021 sixth-round selection saw little work on offense during his rookie campaign, getting one carry for four yards and one reception on one target for six yards in 13 games. Instead Brightwell was a consistent contributor on special teams, a role he'll likely continue this upcoming season.
Kadarius Toney
Kadarius Toney Passing on voluntary program
Wed, Apr 20, 2022, 9:38 AM
Head coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday that Toney (shoulder) isn't present for the start of voluntary offseason workouts, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Toney, who ended his rookie season dealing with a shoulder injury, isn't yet participating in team activities this offseason. Of course, it's only April, and there's still plenty of time for the 2021 first-round pick to get in some on-field work before Week 1, but his decision to abstain from early voluntary activities is notable. Perhaps most significantly, as Daboll notes, is the fact that Toney has yet to receive a copy of the new offensive playbook.
Sterling Shepard
Sterling Shepard Could return by August
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 5:24 PM
GM Joe Schoen noted Monday that he's hopeful Shepard (Achilles) will be back by August, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Shepard, who tore his Achilles back on Dec. 19, has made good progress in his recovery, per Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger. That said, the wideout figures to be eased into the training camp/preseason mix by the Giants, with an eye toward giving him a shot to be available for Week 1 action. Prior to his injury, Shepard recorded 36 catches for 366 yards and a TD in seven games, and once he's up to speed, the 29-year-old will look to reestablish his role in a WR corps that also includes Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney (shoulder) and Darius Slayton.
Richie James
Richie James Signs with Giants
Fri, Mar 25, 2022, 10:22 AM
James signed a one-year, $1 million deal with the Giants on Friday, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: James missed the entire 2021 campaign due to a knee injury, but he showed flashes as a pass catcher for the 49ers during the 2020 campaign. During a Week 9 loss to the Packers that season, the speedy wideout was thrust into a bigger role due to injuries and registered nine catches for 184 yards and a touchdown. However, James' more likely path to playing time in New York will be as a returner. He's averaged 7.3 yards on 51 punt return over the past three seasons and recorded a 97-yard kickoff return during the 2018 campaign.
Matt Breida
Matt Breida Joining Giants' RB mix
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 11:04 AM
Breida agreed to a contract with the Giants on Monday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Breida will provide the Giants with some much-needed backfield depth behind Saquon Barkley following the team's release of Devontae Booker. In nine games with the Bills last season, the 27-year-old speedster carried 26 times for 125 yards and a TD and caught seven of his nine targets for 72 yards and a pair of receiving scores. For now, Breida's competitors for complementary work behind Barkley are Gary Brightwell and Antonio Williams.
Ricky Seals-Jones
Ricky Seals-Jones Finds new home in New York
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 8:05 PM
The Giants and Seals-Jones (concussion) agreed to a contract Wednesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Seals-Jones is joining the fifth organization of his career and a team in great need at his position after Evan Engram left for Jacksonville, Kyle Rudolph and Kaden Smith (knee) were cut in recent weeks, and Levine Toilolo (Achilles) hit free agency. Seals-Jones flashed at times last season for Washington when Logan Thomas (knee) was sidelined, gathering in 30 of 49 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. With the Giants, Seals-Jones will serve as the team's unquestioned top tight end due to the competition combining for three career catches, all by Chris Myarick last season.
Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod Taylor Inks deal with Big Blue
Tue, Mar 15, 2022, 5:30 PM
The Giants and Taylor agreed to terms of a two-year contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Taylor was a member of the Bills when new Giants GM Joe Schoen joined Buffalo's front office in 2017. At 32 years old, Taylor brings a wealth of experience to New York's quarterback room, having started 53 games for four different organizations. In his most recent stint with the Texans last season, the 2011 sixth-round pick completed 91 of 150 passes for 966 yards, five touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing 19 times for 151 yards and three more scores in six starts. With the Giants, Taylor will serve as the direct backup to three-year pro Daniel Jones (neck), whose injury history may allow the former to get on the field again in 2022.
C.J. Board
C.J. Board Back with Big Blue
Mon, Mar 14, 2022, 2:29 PM
Board agreed to a contract with the Giants on Monday, Michael Eisen of the Giants' official website reports.
Analysis: Board played in the first six games of the 2021 campaign. He caught four passes for 51 yards and averaged 24.8 yards on 11 kickoff returns and 16.5 yards on two punt returns. However, he fractured his arm during a blowout loss to the Rams on Oct. 17, which landed him on injured reserve for the rest of the season. Nonetheless, the undrafted wideout out of Chattanooga figures to be healthy and ready to contribute by training camp.
David Sills
David Sills Re-signed by Giants
Sun, Mar 13, 2022, 9:40 AM
The Giants re-signed Sills on Friday, John Fennelly of USA Today reports.
Analysis: Sills, who was an impending exclusive rights free agent, made four appearances for the Giants last season. He play 95 total offensive snaps and caught two of six targets for 17 yards.
Sterling Shepard
Sterling Shepard Agrees to restructured contract
Thu, Mar 10, 2022, 5:22 PM
Shepard (Achilles) agreed to a restructured contract with the Giants on Thursday, Zack Rosenblatt of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Analysis: Shepard will remain with the Giants for a seventh consecutive year while likely taking a pay cut after sustaining a season-ending Achilles' injury in mid-December during the 2021 campaign. The wideout's recovery process is going smoothly so far, and there's optimism that he could be cleared to return by early summer. The 29-year-old, who hasn't played a full season in any of the last three years, hauled in 36 of 53 targets for 366 yards and a touchdown across seven games in 2021, all career-low marks.
Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley Unlikely to be traded
Fri, Mar 4, 2022, 2:44 PM
The Giants aren't expected to trade Barkley, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Analysis: GM Joe Schoen noted earlier this week that he's at least willing to entertain calls from other teams regarding any player on the team's roster, fueling speculation that Barkley could potentially be dealt. At this stage, it doesn't look like such a move is in the works, with Rapoport reporting Friday that it "doesn't seem like teams have called, doesn't seem like [Schoen] has listened if they have. I don't believe Saquon's going anywhere." Barkley -- the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft -- is in line to earn $7.2 million in 2022 after the Giants exercised the fifth-year option of his rookie contract last April.
Sterling Shepard
Sterling Shepard Pay cut being discussed
Thu, Mar 3, 2022, 9:40 AM
The Giants have discussed the possibility of Shepard (Achilles) needing to take a pay cut this offseason, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
Analysis: Shepard is scheduled for a cap hit of roughly $12.5 million in the 2022 season, while coming off an injury-plagued campaign that ended with a torn left Achilles mid-December. That likely puts the 29-year-old on track to miss all of spring activities, and potentially the start of the upcoming season. Nor are injury concerns a new development for Shepard, who missed eight regular-season games from 2019-20. While the Giants do have incentive to keep Shepard in house, as he's proven to be one of Daniel Jones' most trusted targets when healthy, it's worth noting that the team can also get out of the final two years of his contract for just under $8 million in dead cap.
Saquon Barkley
Saquon Barkley Team open to offers?
Wed, Mar 2, 2022, 2:50 PM
Based on GM Joe Schoen's comments Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN suggests that the Giants could consider moving Barkley this offseason.
Analysis: Though the team parted ways with TE Kyle Rudolph and RB Devontae Booker on Wednesday, the Giants still have to continue to navigate through some salary cap issues in advance of the 2022 season. With that in mind, Schoen indicated that he's "open to everything" in terms of roster management. "We're open for business on the entire roster," Schoen noted, while adding "if anyone is going to call and they're interested in any of our players. I'm certainly going to listen." Though any potential transaction involving Barkley is purely speculative at this stage, Raanan believes that the Giants will at least be willing to field calls from other teams inquiring about the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, who is guaranteed $7.2 million in 2022 on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract.
